South Korea conducts first civil defence exercise in six years

South Korea conducted its first civil defence exercise in six years, amid North Korea’s missile threat. Seoul's interior ministry said that they were “preparing for a quick evacuation in the event of an air raid attack such as North Korea’s missile provocations.”

On Wednesday, air raid sirens wailed around central Seoul as authorities stopped cars and told residents to go to underground bunkers for South Korea’s civil defence exercise.

South Korea conducted the 20-minute drill. However, many people appeared to ignore calls to seek shelter.

According to reports, the South Korean government has reinstated the drills into the annual Ulchi civil defense exercises, which are staged in conjunction with the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, which South Korean and the United States forces began on Monday.

Reportedly, the community leaders wearing yellow jackets and helmets with the "Civil Defence" badge asked people to leave the streets for 20 minutes to conduct the drill. Air-raid sirens started at 0500 GMT. However, many people ignored those requests.

Na Eun, a 52-year-old architectural designer told Reuters, "I didn't know about the drill. People don't seem to care about it much.”

Park Joo-ui, a community leader of the Jongno district in Seoul, said, “People are just not interested.”

According to reports, Yoon Suk Yeol, the President of South Korea, visited the Command Post Tango, a United States Forces Korea's military bunker complex in South Korea. He lauded the joint drills between the US and South Korea.

The President reportedly called drills a "source of power to deter North Korea's provocations.” The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS), an 11-day joint exercise between the US and South Korea, will run from August 21 to August 31. The two countries conducted various contingency drills.

The members of United Nations Command, the multinational military force, also joined the military exercise.
