In order to develop stronger trade and investment links, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, met with Zafrul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry for Malaysia, in Abu Dhabi. A delegation of top trade officials from Malaysia visited the UAE, and the meeting was a part of that trip. Al Zeyoudi praised the two nations' solid relations during the meetings and emphasised the UAE's commitment to enhancing commercial cooperation and creating opportunities for both countries' business communities. The UAE and Malaysia are negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which was announced during H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi's, visit to Kuala Lumpur in May 2023. The negotiations for this agreement were also discussed by the two parties. The first meeting between the two trade ministers occurred earlier this month in Jakarta at the ASEAN Business & Investment Summit, under

Global investment in quantum technology reaches historic high

The quantum technology industry is growing at a remarkable rate and investments in the potentially ground-breaking technology are at an all-time high. While excitement is growing, quantum technology still has a long way to go and there is some concern that the industry may be over-hyped. The quantum technology industry consists of companies and organizations that are working to develop cutting edge quantum hardware, software, applications, and related services. Research institutions, universities, and government agencies also work to advance the quantum field. Total annual investment in quantum start-ups hit a new high of $2.35 billion in 2022, though the actual growth of the industry was only 1% year-on-year. That is according to a report from global consulting firm McKinsey & Company, which examines the blossoming industry and shows how growing interest has led to a huge increase in funding.

Musk announces impressive 3 billion daily views for X's long-form posts

Zuckerberg's philanthropy project plans AI system for life sciences

Zuckerberg's philanthropy venture plans to build a computing system powered by artificial intelligence for life sciences research to study human cells and diseases. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, created by Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, will use the computing system to run openly available AI models, the philanthropy venture said on Tuesday. AI has been used in the life sciences domain for some years. Among the popular platforms, Google DeepMind's AlphaFold can predict protein structures, while Nvidia's RadImageGAN, an AI model for radiology, can catch a broad range of medical conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and cancer. "Bringing the power of generative AI to biology at scale will allow researchers to incorporate these technological advances into their work, which will accelerate efforts to cure, prevent, or manage all disease," Chan said.

viTal to boosting agri production

Image
Agricultural production declined significantly during H1-FY23 after the countrywide torrential rains provoked devastating floods in the year 2022, reports WealthPK.  The heavy monsoon rainfall during the months of June, July and August inundated almost one third of the country, resulting in severe crop losses. The floods coincided with the Kharif season. Consequently, all important crops sustained damages. Compared to the last year, rice reported the highest losses followed by cotton. Sugarcane and maize reported relatively lesser losses. According to the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFS&R), production of cotton and rice fell by 24.6 and 40 percent, respectively. Damages to important crops and livestock along with supply chain disruptions caused food shortages and worsened the food security situation by limiting the affordability and availability of food.  The damages were more pronounced in the Sindh province.

UAE's Belt and Road Initiative Summit participation highlights its role as global trade hub linking Asia, Europe and Africa

Image
Essential function in global trade The UAE has been utilising its development potential, advantageous position, and innovative economic role in the area to be an active player in the Belt and Road initiative since its inception. Since the effort emphasises the UAE's crucial position in global trade and is in accordance with the goals of the UAE Centenary, it is seen as a good chance to promote the nation's growth and investment ambitions regionally and internationally. Since they account for over 30% of the UAE's non-oil trade, the economic partnership agreements the UAE established as part of the programme serve as a crucial foundation of that sector. New business and trade alliances The UAE's involvement in and support of the effort will benefit trade, infrastructure, and transit projects, lower investment costs, and pave the path for the country to forge new economic and trade alliances. The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which is headed by China and

Introducing Tech Decoded: The latest technology news direct to your inbox

Tech news isn't a speciality any more. It's just the news. AI, social media drama, Elon Musk's latest proclamations - it's all mainstream. But it differs from other types of news in one key way. A wiser colleague than I, who covered the technology beat for years, once told me that editors always want an "iPhone moment", where someone walks out on a stage and reveals a brand new invention that will change our lives. Take the current AI boom as an example. The technology behind ChatGPT was being developed for years before the current craze - and that's why GPT was already on version 3.5 by the time most people heard of it. There's a much deeper development cycle that goes on before major companies start tacking the latest buzzword on every product they make. That's been true for all the tech hype cycles in recent years, whether it's "the algorithm", blockchain, web3, or whatever else. The truth is that major technology shifts are usua

Oil-Capturing Technology Offers 10x Improvement Cleaning Up Hazardous Spills

Image
AUSTIN, Texas  To combat the extreme environmental toll of major oil spills, researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have created a technology that could significantly improve cleanup capabilities compared with current methods. The new technology uses a dual-layer mesh roller coupled with an induction heating technique, with material properties that allow it to separate oil from water and then remove that oil from the ocean with high efficiency and throughput. In experiments, the researchers showed the potential to retrieve up to 1,400 kilograms of viscous oil per square meter per hour, which is about 10 times better than the way oil is cleaned up today. “When you have a widespread oil spill in the ocean, it slowly diffuses into the water, so how quickly and efficiently you can retrieve the oil has a major impact on the marine environment,” said Guihua Yu, a professor of materials science in the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering and

AlNeyadi achieved inspiring journey for every Emirati and Arab: UAE’s Ajman Ruler

Image
Sultan Al Neyadi, in particular, has made history for every Emirati and Arab by spending six months aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Three additional astronauts who had already touched down on Earth were present with Sultan AlNeyadi. This NASA space mission included astronauts Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, as well as Alneyadi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. The Ajmani sultan praises Neyadi's earthly comeback. Sheikh Humaid extolled Neyadi's accomplishment, saying it mirrored the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's dream and solidified the UAE's position as one of the world's top nations in this area because of the foresight of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Artificial Intelligence: NI can be 'testing centre' for new technology

Image
Northern Ireland can be a testing centre for artificial intelligence in the UK, according to a group representing the software industry. Belfast-based IT firm Kainos announced it was investing £10m to develop the use of generative AI in its business. David Crozier, new head of The Software Alliance, believes more companies in Northern Ireland will follow suit. He described the Kainos announcement as a "super statement of intent". He said Northern Ireland had "historically been very strong at developing enterprise software solutions" so it was "no surprise" technology companies here were investing in research and innovation. "Kainos won't be the last company to make announcements in terms of investing in AI, and generative AI in particular, and I think that's where Northern Ireland can be very strong in terms of its value proposition."
