Apple Scraps Self-Driving Car Project After 10 Years, Refocuses on Developing Advanced AI Technologies

The tech giant Apple has canceled its ambitious electric vehicle project dubbed "Project Titan" after over a decade of planning and development efforts. The company has reportedly shifted its strategic focus and resources from electric automobiles to artificial intelligence technology instead.

Project Titan was initiated by Apple around 10 years ago in 2014 with the goal of developing fully autonomous, driverless electric vehicles. Over the years, the endeavor faced numerous obstacles and setbacks that delayed its projected timeline. By 2019, Apple had significantly reduced the workforce dedicated to the project from over 1,000 employees to just 190 staff members.

Despite investing billions of dollars into research and development, Apple ultimately failed to achieve meaningful progress with Project Titan. This was due in part to technical challenges as well as broader headwinds in the automotive sector. With the global economy slowing and interest rates rising, consumer demand has weakened for expensive electric vehicles. Many major automakers have likewise scaled back investments in EVs.

Now, Apple has formally canceled Project Titan altogether and transitioned its focus to AI. The company aims to strengthen its capabilities in artificial intelligence, which offers applications across various industries. By reallocating resources from electric vehicles to AI, Apple wants to remain at the cutting edge of innovation and stay competitive in the technology market.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledged Apple's withdrawal from car manufacturing with an ambiguous tweet containing emojis. This move by Apple signifies the end of its venture into automotive production but signals a new phase of prioritizing emerging technologies under its pivot to artificial intelligence.
