Promoting and Protecting Human Rights through Engagement with the United Nations

The Union Association for Human Rights is a governmental organisation based in the United Arab Emirates that has consultative status with the United Nations. Established in January 2024, it aims to promote and protect human rights both within the UAE and internationally.

At the recent 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Association actively participated in the high-level segment. It was represented by its President, Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Kaabi, as well as Vice President Maryam Al Ahmadi and a team of experts. Through this engagement with the HRC, the Association seeks to give a voice to human rights issues and contribute to the global dialogue on protecting civilians.

During the session, the Association made several recommendations focused on strengthening accountability and compliance with international law. It called for transparent investigations into violations of humanitarian and human rights law. The Association also stressed the importance of coordinating between UN agencies and militaries globally to enhance humanitarian awareness and ensure forces uphold laws of war. This would help protect civilians caught in conflicts or facing violence.

The Association further urged all UN bodies and agencies to make addressing the suffering of women and children during wars a top priority. It advocated activating procedures aimed at achieving international protection for civilians through times of armed conflict and military planning. By actively engaging at the UN Human Rights Council, the Association works to advance human rights in the international arena.
