Indian delegation holds talks with key entities in UAE on IMEEC

Indian delegation recently visited the United Arab Emirates to hold discussions on cooperation for the India, Middle East, Europe Economic Corridor IMEEC. The visit took place within three months of India and the UAE signing an agreement on the framework for the IMEEC project.

The project aims to enhance regional economic integration through more efficient transport connections between South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The delegation met with officials from key UAE ports like Dubai's DP World and Abu Dhabi Ports Group to discuss facilitating trade movements between India and UAE. They also held meetings with UAE Customs Authorities to explore cooperation on regulatory issues related to the corridor.

The IMEEC is envisioned as comprising two corridors - an east corridor connecting India to the Gulf region and a northern corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe. The objective is to provide a reliable cross border ship to rail network that supplements existing maritime routes. This can help increase trade efficiency and reduce costs by securing supply chains.

The corridor also intends to boost economic cooperation, job creation, and lower greenhouse gas emissions through greater integration of the regions of Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Both India and the UAE have expressed strong commitment to making progress on the IMEEC project. The quick visit by the Indian delegation within three months of the framework agreement shows the importance both governments attach to this strategic initiative.

The discussions in the UAE explored ways to take forward cooperation between relevant stakeholders for early implementation of the IMEEC agreement. This is aimed at unlocking the economic opportunities offered by improved connectivity between these important business hubs.
