UAE releases new AI model to compete with big tech

The United Arab Emirates has released a new open source artificial intelligence model as part of its efforts to compete with large technology companies in the development of advanced AI. Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute announced the launch of Falcon 2 11B and Falcon 2 11B VLM, text and vision-language models that join the ranks of other publicly available large language models. The government research body aims to demonstrate the UAE's capabilities in artificial intelligence through the development and release of such models.

The new Falcon models come at a time when companies and countries are actively working to develop their own advanced AI after the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI in 2022. Like Meta's Llama model, the Falcon series has been made openly accessible in a bid to rival major proprietary AI. TII officials expressed optimism about the models' performance and stated they are already working on the next generation dubbed "Falcon 3." They view the new releases as affirming the UAE's ability to compete globally in AI despite its smaller size.

The UAE has placed significant strategic emphasis and investment on artificial intelligence as it seeks to diversify its economy and develop high-tech sectors. Through initiatives like the Falcon models, the Gulf nation aims to emerge as a major player in AI and reduce reliance on importing core technologies from bigger players like the US and China. TII will continue enhancing the models with the goal of providing an independently developed alternative to what is offered commercially.
