Developing Regional Connectivity



Turkey recently hosted an important summit with Iraq Qatar and the UAE to discuss the Development Road Project. This $20 billion initiative launched by Iraq aims to connect the important port of Basra to Turkey and Europe via roads and rail networks. The project would boost Iraq's economy by establishing an efficient transport corridor for trade. It would also strengthen cooperation between the participating countries. 


At the summit the transport ministers reviewed progress on the project so far and discussed strategies to speed up its implementation They recognized the significant potential it carries in terms of reducing transportation costs and times for trade between Asia and Europe. Through the project travel time for goods between these regions could be cut by 15 days It will position Iraq as a vital logistics hub.


Turkey pledged its full support to make the Development Road Project a reality Given its strategic location Turkey can play a central role in facilitating land transportation between the Middle East Caucuses Central Asia and Europe The project is well aligned with its vision of connecting continents It reflects the shared goal of all participants to boost regional integration and collaboration.


Financing construction and management models for the project were some issues addressed The participating countries will continue coordination to realize this important undertaking. Once complete it can generate huge socio economic dividends by boosting trade jobs and prosperity across the wider region for generations The success of this joint venture will also encourage more multilateral cooperation on connectivity and infrastructure development.
