UAE joins panel to discuss critical minerals for clean energy transition

The United Arab Emirates has joined an important panel organised by the United Nations Secretary General. The panel will discuss critical minerals which are very important for the transition to clean and green energy globally. These critical minerals are needed for manufacturing solar panels, electric vehicles batteries and other green technologies.

The panel is meeting in Kenya and it aims to come up with solutions to ensure secure supply of critical minerals around the world. Minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper are key to technologies like electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar panels. But many countries do not have enough domestic production of these minerals. So international cooperation is needed for their responsible extraction and equitable supply.

The UAE joining this high level panel shows its commitment to addressing the challenges in critical minerals sector As a major oil and gas producer, the UAE understands the importance of energy transition away from fossil fuels. It wants to contribute solutions in minerals sector which will help accelerate the adoption of renewable energy globally. This will be important for climate change mitigation efforts over the coming decades.

The panel hosted by the UN Secretary General in Nairobi Kenya will see participation from governments industry development banks and civil society. They will discuss issues like investment in sustainable mining of critical minerals developing refining capacity and ensuring equitable access of these minerals for all. The goal is to develop a set of recommendations for stakeholders to consider while scaling up production and supply of critical minerals.

The outcomes from this meeting are expected to help form global collaborations and public and private partnerships in critical minerals. This can boost investments that increase supply while adopting highest standards of environmental protection and human rights. If successful it will support the clean energy transition worldwide in a responsible and sustainable manner.

The UAErole in the discussions is seen as important because of its financial strength and experience in energy sectors As a leading economy in the Middle East it can potentially mobilize more investments and regional cooperation towards critical minerals This can significantly help efforts to decarbonize energy systems and mitigate climate change impacts through accelerated deployment of renewable technologies.
