UAE's Maritime Fleet Ranks Among the World's Largest

The United Arab Emirates has achieved a significant milestone by ranking among the top 35 countries globally with the largest shipping fleets. This ranking is based on tonnage and capacity, according to the latest report from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) for 2024. This recognition highlights the UAE's growing importance in global maritime trade.

In addition to the UAE, the report also mentioned three other Arab countries: Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar. This shows that several nations in the region are making strides in enhancing their maritime capabilities. The presence of these countries on the list reflects a collective effort to develop efficient shipping operations and logistics.

The Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) provided more insights into the region's maritime status. According to their data, 10 Gulf container ports were ranked among the 70 most efficient ports in the world. This efficiency is crucial for facilitating international trade and improving logistics in the region.

The Gulf commercial fleet has emerged as a major player, accounting for 54.2 percent of the total Arab commercial fleet in 2023. Moreover, most GCC countries have exceeded the Arab average in the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index, showcasing their strong connections in global shipping networks. This connectivity is vital for enhancing trade and economic growth.

Regarding container productivity, two Gulf ports have been recognized for their high output, exceeding 4 million containers. Additionally, eight ports are classified as medium-production ports, which contribute significantly to the region's trade activities. These figures illustrate the growing capacity and efficiency of Gulf ports.

The establishment of the Unified Maritime Operations Centre is another key achievement for the GCC countries. This center plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of maritime navigation in the region. By fostering collaboration among member states, it enhances stability and supports the UAE's position as a leading logistics hub in global shipping.
