Why is technology not making us more productive?

Image
We are often told that we are in the midst of a technological revolution. That business and the world of work continue to be transformed and improved by computers, the internet, the increased speed of communication, data processing, robotics, and now - artificial intelligence. There is only one small problem with all this - none of it seems to show up in the economic data. If all this technology really is making us all work faster and better, there is precious little evidence. Between 1974 and 2008 the UK's productivity - the amount of output you get per worker - grew at an annual rate of 2.3%. But between 2008 and 2020 the rate of productivity growth collapsed to around 0.5% per annum. And in the first three months of this year, UK productivity was actually down 0.6% on a year earlier. It is a similar picture in most other Western nations. In the US, productivity growth between 1995 and 2005 was 3.1%, but it then fell to 1.4% from 2005 to 2019.

Bill Gates on next-generation nuclear power technology

Its elevation is actually higher than its population and it attracts tourists who stop in to hunt for local fossils. But the best jobs come from different kinds of fossils — fossil fuels. A coal mine and natural gas wells power three electricity plants and employ upwards of 450 people. But as fossil fuel use dies out across the U.S., Kemmerer sees good times ahead and could become one of the world's most famous towns, thanks to one of the world's wealthiest men. Bill Gates and his 10-year-old energy company TerraPower are planning their first cutting-edge nuclear power plant in Kemmerer.

KHNP launches reactor safety enhancement technology

Image
The Technical Specification Operator Support System (TOSS) is a web-based system that monitors the operational status of nuclear power plants in real time, KHNP said. It is characterised by detecting unsatisfactory operating conditions and notifying the operator, checking and providing guidance on how to take action. In addition, the vast operational technical guidelines have been digitised so that they can be automatically searched. Through the use of the system, it is possible to check the operation limiting conditions and action requirements that change according to various variables in real time, the company said. According to the results, prompt safety measures are possible, which is expected to further enhance the safety of nuclear power plants, such as preventing human errors. KHNP said TOSS has been in pilot use at units 1 and 2 of the Shin Wolsong plant for the past three months and that it plans to apply the system at all of its power plants in the future.

Meta’s latest AI model is free for all

Meta is going all in on open-source AI. The company is today unveiling LLaMA 2, its first large language model that’s available for anyone to use—for free.  Since OpenAI released its hugely popular AI chatbot ChatGPT last November, tech companies have been racing to release models in hopes of overthrowing its supremacy. Meta has been in the slow lane. In February when competitors Microsoft and Google announced their AI chatbots, Meta rolled out the first, smaller version of LLaMA, restricted to researchers. But it hopes that releasing LLaMA 2, and making it free for anyone to build commercial products on top of, will help it catch up.  The company is actually releasing a suite of AI models, which include versions of LLaMA 2 in different sizes, as well as a version of the AI model that people can build into a chatbot, similar to ChatGPT. Unlike ChatGPT, which people can access through OpenAI’s website, the model must be downloaded from Meta’s launch partners Microsoft Azure, Amazon We

How ‘chiplets’ are emerging as a core part of China’s tech strategy

The sale of struggling Silicon Valley startup zGlue’s patents in 2021 was unremarkable except for one detail: The technology it owned, designed to cut the time and cost for making chips, showed up 13 months later in the patent portfolio of Chipuller, a startup in China’s southern tech hub Shenzhen. Chipuller purchased what is referred to as chiplet technology, a cost efficient way to package groups of small semiconductors to form one powerful brain capable of powering everything from data centers to gadgets at home. The previously unreported technology transfer coincides with a push for chiplet technology in China that started about two years ago, according to a Reuters analysis of hundreds of patents in the U.S. and China and dozens of Chinese government procurement documents, research papers and grants, local and central government policy documents and interviews with Chinese chip executives. Industry experts say chiplet technology has become even more important to China since the U
